Each student enrolled in Colloquium is responsible for two blog assignments: writing comments for a guest speaker for the Colloquium blog and evaluating another student’s blog entry.
A summary of the speaker’s presentation will be posted each Thursday at the Colloquium blog site. Students have until the following Tuesday at midnight to submit their responses to the week’s summary and presentation. Click on “Comment.” Responses should be substantial, well thought out, and a minimum of 200 words. See below.
In addition, each student is required to evaluate another student’s blog entry in order to make the blog a more useful exercise and to comply with UMKC’s effort to better assess what our students learn. The evaluation is due one week after the blog entry is posted and the form is to be signed by the evaluator and turned in to Professor Gayle Levy.
Neither the blog entry nor the assessment will be graded, but we will organize the data we gather from the assessments in order to gauge if you are learning what we intend for you to get out of Colloquium.
Please write your blog following the guidelines listed below:
- Write well-constructed, grammatically correct sentences in which the words are spelled correctly
- Do not repeat or summarize what the speaker has said
- Comment on what you learned from the presentation, how it relates to other classes you are taking or have taken or other presentations you’ve heard in Colloquium (either this semester or in previous semesters)
- Some of the presenters take an interdisciplinary approach to their research. What are the different methodologies used? How does the combining of diverse disciplinary perspectives make this research more provocative? Or is the interdisciplinary approach unsuccessful in this particular case? In what way is it unsuccessful?
