Rockhurst High School Archives Unpaid Internship

Rockhurst High School Archives is taking applications for 2 unpaid summer internships. The Archive Interns will work closely with the School Archivist on some of the following projects: processing & cataloguing the collection, collection care & conservation, subject file creation, and school newspaper digitization project. In addition, the Archives Intern will assist with research and development of two digital exhibits being planned for the schools new Learning Commons & Sports Hall of Fame.

About: The Rockhurst High School Archives documents the history of Rockhurst from the time of its founding in 1910 to the present. The Archives collections encompass a wide array of media and subject matter. Paper-based collections include publications, curricula, class lists, office records, oral histories, scrapbooks, event programs and photographs. Videotapes, audiotapes, slides, photographs and a variety of three-dimensional artifacts also provide documentation on the history of Rockhurst High School.

Length: 40 hours from June 5th-August 4th. Beginning & ending dates are flexible and the internship may extend into the fall semester if desired.

COLLECTION INTERN

The Wornall/Majors House Museums is a non-profit that preserves and interprets two of Kansas City’s most significant antebellum landmarks – the John Wornall House Museum and the Alexander Majors House Museum. The Museums engage the Kansas City community by bringing history to life through innovative, hands-on programs and experiences. The houses, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places, feature hands-on tours, field trips, summer camps, adult education programs, and more.

 About the Internship

Our interns experience many facets of museum management. We value our interns and go the extra mile to make sure you receive a learning experience that fits your career goals.

The internship runs through the summer and may extend into the fall if desired. This is an unpaid position for college credit. The internship will focus on the John Wornall House’s collections. Throughout the course of the internship, the intern will research collection items using museum records and outside sources, and update collection records in Past Perfect. 

Responsibilities

  • Examine museum collection records
  • Conduct research to determine validity of records
  • Conduct research to obtain new information
  • Update collection records in Past Perfect
  • Update Past Perfect to reflect latest inventory
  • Other tasks as assigned

Requirements

  • Familiarity with research methods
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to discern importance and validity of information
  • Genuine interest in the history of the area and of the Civil War
  • Background in museum studies, history, or library science preferred.

Schedule

The intern will work 15 hours a week at the John Wornall House Museum for a minimum of 8 weeks. Beginning and ending dates can be flexible and the internship may extend into the fallsemester if desired. In addition, the intern may be asked to participate in special events and field trips. These hours are not required and may be substituted for a regularly scheduled shift.

SUMMER CAMP MANAGER

ABOUT THE CAMP

Camp Wornall/Majors introduces children to what daily life was like on the frontier 150 years ago through interactive activities and experiences. Campers will have the opportunity to travel through history, from Native American communities through the Civil War. History will come to life for children as they interact with reenactors and participate in story-telling about the Underground Railroad, the Battle of Westport, the Pony Express, and more. They will also have hands-on opportunities to learn how to create various items that were integral to pioneer life: everything from paint, granola, rope, ink, and fabrics. Camp Wornall/Majors is for children who have completed kindergarten through age 12.

2 Week-long camps take place 9 AM – 4 PM at the Alexander Majors House (8201 State Line Rd., KCMO 64113) Monday-Thursday, and at the John Wornall House (6115 Wornall Rd., KCMO 64114) on Friday.

Dates: June 12-16, July 10-14

3 One-day camps 9 AM – 5 PM, 2 at the Alexander Majors House, and 1 at the John Wornall House.

Dates: June 8, June 26, July 18

JOB DESCRIPTION: CAMP MANAGER

  • The Camp Manager is responsible, in conjunction with the Camp Director, for overseeing the supervision, coordination, and evaluation of Camp Wornall/Majors including:
  • Preparing daily camp activities
  • Leading group activities and lessons
  • Enforcing rules, regulations, and administration of camp programs and activities
  • Supervising volunteers and junior counselors
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRMENTS

  • Two years of college with a major in education, history or non-profit management
  • Availability for all sessions of camp plus additional time to prep for camp as needed.
  • Must pass an NCSI background check.
  • CPR/First Aid certified, or willing to obtain certification, paid for by Wornall/Majors.
  • Preference will be given to individuals with relevant experience in history or education

Compensation: $8/hr.

Unpaid Internship Opportunity at The Institute of Black Invention & Technology

The Institute of Black Invention & Technology, Inc. is looking for an unpaid curatorial intern for the Fall 2017 semester.

Title: Curatorial Intern

Reports to: Sandra Lamb, Director of Programing

Time: 1 academic credit hour, 40 hours for the semester

The Institute of Black Invention & Technology, Inc. was founded in Amherst, MA by Carroll and Sandra Lamb. It became incorporated in 2005 as a non-profit corporation. The Institute is a traveling museum which highlight the accomplishments and achievement s of African American men, women and youth who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art, math and science.

Position Summary: The Curatorial Intern will work with the Director of Programming in assisting with research and development of current and upcoming exhibitions and programs. the intern will also assist in maintaining reports on all artifacts and data entry regarding the collection. this internship will allow the student to earn valuable experience and knowledge in a non-traditional museum setting.

Position Requirements:

Volunteer Opportunity at Freedom’s Frontier

Freedom’s Frontier is partnering with the Kansas City Public Library to compile oral history interviews with members of the Quindaro Community. The project is looking for volunteers to help conducting and/or transcribing oral histories starting in February.

Description

The Wornall/Majors House Museums is seeking one individual to work with our field trip and summer camp program as an unpaid intern, to transition into a paid position of Summer Camp Director. Our Educational Outreach Intern is responsible for developing new and strengthening existing relationships with local schools and community groups to bring classrooms to the Wornall and Majors Houses for spring field trips. Building on their work with educational field trips, the intern will also assist in developing our Summer Camp curriculum, registration, and marketing. A successful intern will then transition into Summer Camp Director for the summer season and is eligible for a stipend for their work with the camp program.

Responsibilities

* Foster new and existing relationships with private and public schools to bring spring field trips to the Wornall and Majors House.
* Research and reach out to community groups, such as Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.
* Schedule field trips, handle logistical details and recommend activities to incoming schools.
* Attend and assist with field trips, as schedule permits.
* Develop Summer Camp curriculum, including but not limited to scheduling presenters, developing new activities, familiarizing themselves with existing activities, and researching new curriculum strategies.
* Assist in the management of Summer Camp registration materials, communication with parents, and seeking out marketing opportunities.
* Serve as Summer Camp Director through the summer of 2017, managing all day-to-day operations of the Museums’ Summer Camp program, which will include at least two sessions of week-long camp, and two-four sessions of day camp.
* Manage and delegate responsibilities to one-two Camp Assistants as well as multiple Junior Volunteers (aged 12+) for the duration of camp.
* Other administrative tasks as assigned.

Requirements

* Must be available through June-July for all camp-related activities: two sessions of week-long camp (M-F, 8AM-5PM) and two-four sessions of day camps (one day per session, 8AM-5PM).
* Good people skills, including comfort in speaking to a group and managing others.
* Good time management skills when creating and adhering to a schedule, with the ability to be flexible if needed.
* Must pass an NCSI background check.
* CPR/First Aid certified, or willing to obtain certification, paid for by Wornall/Majors.
* Past experience with children preferred.
* Background or interest in education, history, recreation management, or non-profit management preferred.

Details
The position of Educational Outreach Intern begins in January/February and ends in May (start date flexible). This portion of the internship is unpaid. 5-10 hours per week.

This position will transition into Summer Camp Director for June-July, eligible for a stipend of $1200. Half of the stipend will be paid at the start of the first Summer Camp session, with the last half payable upon successful completion of the final session. Approximately 100-125 hours expected in June-July, corresponding with camp sessions.

College internships available at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum

The Harry S. Truman Library is seeking college interns to assist with their education programs. Interns will help provide an interactive museum learning experience to third graders through an educational program at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Mo. This short term paid intern opportunity is available February – April, 2017. The interns will lead groups of 3rd grade students (8/9 yrs old) and move students to stations in the museum galleries and work with students to complete tasks in those areas. The interns will assist students in finding clues and answers within the exhibits and respond to their questions.

White House Historical Association Internship

White House Historical AssocThe White House Historical Association is seeking a Fall 2016 intern to work within the Curatorial, Exhibitions, and Collections Department in Washington D.C.

Beginning in September 2016, the selected student intern will begin work at the White House Historical Association (WHHA) on a series of projects that engage both the development of the White House Historical Association’s Fall/Spring exhibit and the collections of the David M. Rubenstein National Center for White House History at historic Decatur House.

In addition to both exhibit development and collections-related tasks, the intern will also assist with public programing and events at the White House Historical Association. Collections work will include research, planning, and an opportunity to develop narrative material for the Fall/Spring exhibit. General collections work will also be available to further research efforts and enhance collections records. As the WHHA Fall 2016 Intern, this individual will have the opportunity to work and interact with professionals at the WHHA as well as the White House Office of the Curator, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Blair House, the President’s Guest House, National Park Service, United States Capitol Historical Society, and many others.

Student currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in American fine and decorative arts, history, social-cultural or museum studies with schedule availability during normal business hours from September to December 2016 should consider applying.
