The role of the ombudsperson is to serve as a neutral agent in faculty disputes, facilitating the resolution of concerns or problems related to faculty academic rights, responsibilities and working environments, and will seek to secure expeditious and impartial resolutions. The ombudsperson may:
- Assist faculty members with matters involving compensation, appointments, reviews and promotions, policies and procedures, and non-renewals, when issues and complaints regarding these matters are not resolved through normal channels;
- Act as an informal resource of information; facilitate communication; review complaints and facilitate the resolution of disputes;
- Conduct informal reviews and recommend appropriate action, when called upon by the Provost;
- Assist parties to determine the overall context of a difference of opinion, concern or problem, and if the matter should be pursued;
- Direct the parties to the appropriate office, department or organization, even if the ombudsperson does not become directly involved in the matter;
- Establish simple, orderly processes for receiving complaints and maintaining confidential striving, unless disclosure is required by law or University policy; and
- Recommend changes to existing policies or the development of new policies.
Nancy Day has been appointed a two-year term as the UMKC Faculty Ombudsperson, effective September 1, 2010. Day has a doctorate in social psychology with an emphasis in organizational psychology from the University of Kansas, and a master’s degree in counseling psychology from UMKC. She joined UMKC in 1991 and is currently a tenured associate professor in human resources and organizational behavior at the Bloch School of Business and Public Administration.
Day has taught human resources and organizational behavior courses in the undergraduate, MBA, and Executive MBA programs at the Bloch School. She is a past recipient of the Pierson Teaching Award. She served as director of the Business Administration Division in the Bloch School from 1996 through 2003, and has also served as director of the Executive MBA program and interim associate dean. Her research focuses primarily on compensation and diversity.
Day has served in a number of professional associations, including the Board of Directors, the Research Advisory Panel and the Academic Partners Network of WorldatWork (formerly the American Compensation Association), and the Select Committee on the Glass Ceiling of Greater Kansas City. She was program chair, president, and past president of the Midwest Academy of Management. She is a member of the Academy of Management, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and WorldatWork.
