Poet Dean Young, writer-in-residence, to give public readings, critiques

UMKC’s Department of English and MFA program, the Carolyn Benton Cockefair Chair in Continuing Education and Writers at Work present the 2013 Cockefair Chair Writer-in-Residence, Dean Young.

Young is the author of 10 books of poetry, most recently Bender: New and Selected Poems (Copper Canyon Press, 2012). His Elegy on Toy Piano (2005) was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Young received an MFA in Creative Writing from Indiana University. He has taught at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and the University of Texas-Austin, where he holds the William Livingston Chair of Poetry.

The American Academy of Arts and Letters says Young’s work is as “entertaining as a three-ring circus. He is one of the most inventive and satisfying poets writing today.”

During his visit to UMKC, there are opportunities for the public to hear Young read his works and discuss the art of poetry:
