About the Workshop

Dates: TBD

Composers ages 12-18 will broaden their horizons and hone their craft in this mix of classes and small group sessions with UMKC composition faculty and performers. This exciting week-long experience helps young composers find their creative voices while improving their musical skills in a community of composers and performers through a variety of activities. Participants will have their compositions critiqued and discussed with distinguished faculty, allowing each composer to grow artistically while creating new music. Throughout the workshop, composers participate in discussions of notation, composition techniques, counterpoint, orchestration, and notation. Participants will listen to, analyze, and discuss concert music of our time as often inspired by composers of the past. Composers will write works that will be read by performers, with the possibility of having their pieces premiered and presented on the final day of the concert. If you already know you want to be a composer, this workshop will better prepare you for applying to college programs and your career as a composer. If you just want to explore what it means to be a composer and try your hand at it, we welcome you also! All skill and interest levels are welcome!

All programs will follow health guidelines mandated by the city, state, and federal government. For more information, please see UMKC’s Coronavirus page: UMKC Coronavirus
