Each year, the president of the University of Missouri system awards the President’s Award for University Citizenship. There are three categories of awards: leadership, service and mentoring. The Leadership Award recognizes faculty who have provided exemplary leadership for the university. Examples of areas of leadership include, but are not limited to, faculty/shared governance, major curricular reform or program development, chairing a department or academic program, and fostering collaboration between or among departments, divisions or schools.
At a program held on April 12, it was announced that the 2012 recipient of the President’s Award for University Citizenship in Leadership was our own department head, Joy D. Swallow, FAIA. Joy received the award from UM President Tim Wolfe and UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton.
Although the award was a surprise for Joy, it was no surprise to any of those who have witnessed her years of dedication and perseverance in establishing this department. We have her to thank for the quality and consistency of vision that have made the AUP+D what it is. Congratulations, Joy—and thanks for all the hard work!
